A Talk by Lisa Lorek
In today’s Weapons of Mass Creation Fest talk, we highlight hand letterer Lisa Lorek. Lisa Lorek is a lettering artist, muralist, and designer born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio.
In Lisa’s talk, Forever a Work in Progress, she talks about the balance between her design day job and her lettering-filled night shift, one that is “full of life lessons, surprises, and embarrassing stories.”
Lisa notes, “I wasn’t born loving art and I didn’t wake up with a passion to hand-letter everyday. No one does that. Following multiple curiosities and saying “yes” to everything thrown at me helped pinpoint my true happiness: finding the problems I enjoy solving. As personal hero and design legend, Paula Scher says, ‘I’m driven by the hope that I haven’t made my best work yet.’”
After graduating from the University of Dayton, Lisa started her career in the world of advertising. Currently, she splits her time between her position as an Art Director at Global Prairie and as a freelancer, working on a variety of lettering projects, including coloring books, murals, magazine covers, and gallery shows. In 2017, she was named one of Cleveland.com’s Top 29 Cleveland Visual Artists to Follow on Instagram. She also won third place in the 2016 Ink Wars at Weapons of Mass Creation. In her spare time, Lisa enjoys hiking, failed cooking attempts, and spending time with her big Slovenian family.
